After both teams finished their 20 overs tied at 187, with Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton scoring fifties, a tense first Super Over also ended in a 17-run stalemate. It took a second Super Over for South Africa to hold their nerve, defending a target of 24 runs after David Miller and Tristan Stubbs had clobbered 23 in the tie-breaker. Facing their eventual semifinal opponents early in the draw, the Proteas showed incredible discipline. By finishing first in their Super 8 group, South Africa heads into the Eden Gardens semifinal with the best Net Run Rate in the whole tournament. They’re facing a New Zealand team that barely made it through on NRR, making the Proteas the clear favorites to reach their second straight World Cup final.
