T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8: Big upset in the points table after India’s defeat, know the condition of the groups
Ahmedabad: The Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 is in full swing. Team India had to face a crushing 76-run defeat against South Africa in its very first match, due to which the Indian team’s campaign suffered a setback in the beginning. This defeat has badly affected India’s net run rate. Let’s take a look at the current points table of both the groups.
Group 1 status (India, South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe)
South Africa defeated India to gain two points and have an impressive net run rate of +3.800, making them top in the group. On the other hand, India are at the bottom with zero points after losing one match and the net run rate has reached -3.800. West Indies and Zimbabwe have not played any match yet, hence their points are zero. Now a big win in every match is necessary for India, otherwise the path to the semi-finals may be difficult.
Group 2 status (England, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka)
England beat Sri Lanka to pick up two points and top the group with a strong net run rate of +2.550 (or thereabouts). The match between Pakistan and New Zealand was canceled due to rain, so both the teams got one point each and their net run rate is still zero. Sri Lanka are at the bottom with zero points after losing one match, their net run rate is also quite negative.
Today’s match and India’s future schedule
On Monday, there will be an exciting match between West Indies and Zimbabwe in Group 1, which will start at 7 pm at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The winning team will get two points, which can further change the picture of the group.
Now the Indian team will have to wait. Their next match is against Zimbabwe on Thursday, followed by a clash with West Indies on Sunday. Team India will now have to win by a big margin so that the net run rate improves and remains in the race for the semi-finals.
