T20 World Cup 2026: Which rules will decide the path to the semi-finals in Super-8? Know the complete format
Delhi: The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has now reached an exciting turn. The group stage is in its final stages and the Super-8 stage is going to start in a few days. Till Tuesday, seven teams had entered the next round, while the eighth team will be decided by the match between Pakistan and UAE. Each team reaching this stage will have to play three matches each. India will play its first Super-8 match against South Africa on Saturday.
Super-8 stage format and points system
Like the league stage, the matches in Super-8 will also be played under the same rules. Each team will play three matches and net run rate will also play an important role to achieve the top position in the points table. There will be no knockout matches in this stage, rather the further position will be decided on the basis of points system.
Match result in case of rain
If the weather becomes a hindrance, then both the teams will be required to play at least five overs each to determine the result of the match. Even in this phase, provision for reserve day has not been made. If the match is not completed due to rain, the points will be divided between the two teams.
Rule of extra time in case of delay or interruption
Like the group stage, additional 60 minutes time will be given to complete the match in Super-8 also. This additional time will be used to complete play stopped due to weather or other interruptions. Along with this, each team will be allowed two unsuccessful DRS reviews and the 60 second stop clock rule will also be applicable.
What is the 60 second stop clock rule
Under this rule, when the last ball of an over is declared a dead ball and the DRS process related to that ball ends, the third umpire starts a countdown of 60 seconds. This time is shown on the big screen of the stadium so that the fielding team can start the next over within the stipulated time. Its purpose is to maintain the pace of the game and prevent unnecessary delays.
The tournament is going to be even more competitive with the Super-8 stage, where even a small mistake can cost the teams’ campaign. Cricket lovers can expect exciting matches in the coming days.
