T20 World Cup 2026: What happens if the South Africa Vs New Zealand semi-final is called off due to rain?
South Africa and New Zealand will meet for the second time in the 2026 T20 World Cup, but this time the stakes are much higher. In contrast to their earlier group-stage encounter, which held little importance, this match will determine the first finalist. The game is set to take place on Wednesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
South Africa heads into this knockout match with immense momentum, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. After dominating the group stage, they continued their winning streak in the Super 8s, including a significant victory over India, which solidified their position as one of the top contenders for the title.
On the other hand, New Zealand’s journey has been more up and down. They secured three wins and one loss in the group stage, with their only defeat coming against South Africa. In the Super 8s, they easily defeated Sri Lanka, faced a close defeat to England, and saw their match against Pakistan called off due to rain.
What if rain disrupts the SA vs NZ semifinal?
In contrast to the Super 8s, where no reserve days were allowed, the ICC has built in extra time for the semifinals and final. Match officials will be given 90 additional minutes on the scheduled day to ensure the game is completed
If rain prevents play, there will be no bowl-out or coin toss to decide the outcome. Instead, the teams’ progression will be based on their positions in the Super 8 standings.
If the first semifinal between South Africa and New Zealand on March 4 is entirely interrupted by rain, the match will resume on March 5 from the point it was stopped.
If no play is possible even on the reserve day, the team ranked higher in the Super 8 group will move forward. South Africa topped Super 8 Group 1 with six points, while New Zealand qualified for the semifinal with three points from Group 2. Therefore, in the event of a washout, South Africa would automatically advance to the final.
