“T20 World Cup win, ODI World Cup final, five IPL titles”: Yuvraj Singh reminds critics of Rohit Sharma’s success as captain
Yuvraj Singh mentioned that judging Rohit Sharma on the basis of the team’s poor performances after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph is wrong. The 43-year-old spoke in favour of his former teammate and highlighted his success as a skipper. Yuvi also defended head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is under the scanner for his ordinary display since replacing Rahul Dravid last year.
Australia defeated India by a margin of 3-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. It cost the sub-continent team a spot in the final of the World Test Championship. Earlier, New Zealand whitewashed Rohit Sharma’s team by 3-0 in India, a first-timer in the history of Indian cricket.
“You should look at the performance over five or three years. Gautam Gambhir is new to the system and he needs time. Rohit Sharma won us the ICC T20 World Cup and we also reached the final of the ODI World Cup. He has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, ” Yuvraj told the press at an event.
Yuvraj also spoke about Rohit’s selfless action of opting out of the fifth Test against Australia. “The guy opted out of the game for the betterment of the team. How many captains have done that in the past? Please tell me,” he added.
Yuvraj once again repeated that the 3-0 defeat at home was more shocking than the loss in Australia. “The series defeat against New Zealand was tougher to accept,” he further added.
“Nitish scored a century in his debut Test series while Yashasvi Jaiswal posted 150 plus in his first Test in Australia. We should be taking about these performances,” concluded.
