Taijul Islam rips through Proteas batters, records big feat with 200th Test wicket

New Delhi: Bangladesh bowler Taijul Islam gave a befitting reply to the South African side after they bowled out the hosts for a paltry total of 106 runs in the first innings of the first Test match at Mirpur. The left-arm spinner scripted history as he became the fastest Bangladeshi bowler to claim 200 wickets in Test format.

After Kagiso Rabada rattled the Bangladesh batters with three wickets, claiming his 300th Test wicket, Islam took the revenge by claiming a sensation fifer to shake up the Proteas batters. It was his 13th five-wicket haul in the longest format as he registered figures of 5/48, which included wickets of of Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Matthew Breetzke, and David Bedingham.

Taijul fastest to 200 Test wickets for Bangladesh

Notably, Taijul has become the fastest Bangladesh bowler to claim 200 wickets in Tests and the second Bangladeshi after veteran Shakib Al Hasan to complete the landmark of 200 wickets. Taijul took just 85 innings to complete the milestone, breaking Shakib’s record. He would next eye Shakib’s record for most Test wickets for the team. While Shakib and Taijul are first and second on the elite list, Mehidy Hasan Miraz occupies the third spot with 183 wickets.

Meanwhile, after his sensational bowling spell, South Africa were reduced to 140/6 in 41 overs when stumps were called on the first day in Dhaka. The visitors lead by 34 runs with four wickets in hand. Apart from Taijul, Hasan Mahmud claimed a lone wicket for the Bangladesh team. For South Africa, Tony de Zorzi scored 30 runs while Ryan Rickelton hit 27 runs.
