Taiwan’s Tongxiao festival showcases 29 sand sculptures on the beach through summer
The Tongxiao Sand Sculpture Art Festival opened in Taiwan’s Miaoli County on Friday, with artists putting the finishing touches to 29 sculptures.
Footage shows visitors exploring the exhibition, taking photographs and watching sculptors at work, while families enjoy the nearby beach.
“The nighttime scenery is quite beautiful – the lighting really makes it gorgeous. Last year, there were more sculptures, and they were probably all finished by then,” said Deng, a visitor.
“Right now it’s really about promoting the scenery. There aren’t many places in Miaoli to cool off in summer, so this spot is just right – it’s safe, there are lifeguards, the facilities are good. It keeps getting better,” she added.

Artists from Taiwan and overseas have contributed works to this year’s festival. Its centrepiece, Heart of the World, takes inspiration from the tung blossom.
Now in its third edition, the festival will run from July 4 to Sept. 6, featuring an international sand sculpture competition, live music performances, markets and family activities.
Launched in 2024, the event has become one of Miaoli County’s flagship summer attractions.
