‘Talked to Mahi Bhai on phone…’ What did Sanju Samson say on playing in IPL with Dhoni?
Sanju Samson made India the champion by scoring runs in the knockout matches of T20 World Cup 2026. Sanju, who was out of the playing XI at the beginning of the tournament, made a strong comeback in the Super-8 stage and emerged as the hero of Team India’s victory. Sanju scored 89-89 runs in the semi-finals and final. Earlier, in the virtual quarter-final against West Indies, he had helped the Indian team sail through by playing an unbeaten inning of 97 runs.
After doing wonders in the T20 World Cup, Sanju is now going to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). CSK has included him in their team by trading him from Rajasthan Royals (RR). In his recent interview, Sanju has talked about sharing the dressing room with Mahendra Singh Dhoni and playing against RR. In an interview given to news agency PTI in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday (March 16), he said that he is excited to learn some tricks from former Team India captain Dhoni while playing for CSK in the IPL.

Sanju said on leaving RR
Sanju has played most of his matches in IPL for RR but now he has joined CSK. When these two teams face each other in Guwahati on March 30, Sanju will be seen in CSK jersey. He told reporters, ‘I have spoken to Mahi bhai (Dhoni) on the phone but it would be great to be part of a team with him and play with him. I see this as an opportunity to learn from him.
This will be a home match for RR and 31-year-old Sanju said that he will not let his emotions dominate him in this match. He said, ‘I am excited to play for CSK. This will be the first time I play against RR but I don’t let emotions dominate the field. I left RR because I felt my time in the team was over. I will try to perform my best against them also.

Sanju said that not being able to perform well before the World Cup gave him a chance to introspect. Sanju, who was chosen Player of the Tournament in the World Cup, said, ‘When I left home to play in the World Cup, I was not very confident but fate had something else in store. I played well and got a great welcome.
He further said, ‘When I come out on the field, I carry with me the dreams of thousands of people. They want to see me perform well so that they know that a small town boy can play on the biggest stage of cricket.
The biggest moment for Sanju was to receive a message from the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during the tournament. Apart from this, hugging head coach Gautam Gambhir after winning the title was equally special for this wicketkeeper batsman. Sanju said, ‘Gouti Bhai (Gautam Gambhir) and I have a very deep relationship, which is very old. He didn’t say much, just hugged me for 30 seconds. We used to talk like this.
