Tamil Nadu: Alliance of 21 parties led by DMK, agreement reached to give 28 seats to Congress

Chennai, March 4. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has geared up for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026. Chief Minister M.K. Under the leadership of Stalin, DMK has formed a huge alliance, in which a total of 21 parties have joined. In this sequence, Congress has once again become a part of this alliance and DMK has agreed to give it 28 seats.

In the last assembly elections, Congress had won 18 out of 25 seats.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. An important meeting in this regard was held on Wednesday between Selvaperunthagai. In this meeting the final seal was put on the distribution of constituencies. Under the agreement between DMK and Congress, it has been decided that Congress will contest elections on 28 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. This is three more than the 25 seats won in the 2021 alliance. Last time, Congress contested 25 seats as part of the Secular Progressive Alliance and won 18 seats.

One seat reserved for Congress in Rajya Sabha elections also

Apart from this, one seat has also been reserved for the Congress party in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. In this sequence, DMK has also announced the names of its candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections. The party has once again expressed confidence in senior leader Tiruchi Siva by retaining him as Rajya Sabha MP while it has been decided to send Constantine Ravindran to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. In this alliance, DMK has got 2 seats, Congress has got one and DMDK has got one Rajya Sabha seat.

The alliance was on the verge of collapse, Chidambaram saved

It is noteworthy that at one time this alliance was on the verge of breaking on the demand of share in power and more seats. Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, as an envoy of the party high command, met Stalin on Tuesday and the deadlock was ended after lengthy talks.

Stalin first reached DMK headquarters on Wednesday evening. After this, Congress Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, TNCC President Selvaperunthagai, legislature party leader Rajesh Kumar and other leaders met the Chief Minister and signed the agreement.

Speaking to reporters after the agreement, Selvaperunthagai said, ‘TNCC and Congress high command will announce the candidate for Rajya Sabha seat soon. We are very happy and we have a feeling of satisfaction. Girish Chodankar said that formal seat-sharing talks for Puducherry will start from Thursday.

History created in Tamil Nadu politics

Issuing a press release, DMK wrote, ‘This is the first time in the history of Tamil Nadu politics that the same alliance is facing elections for the fourth time without breaking and including new parties. The history of Tamil Nadu politics so far has been that the alliance formed for the assembly elections could never last till the next election. The party claimed that Chief Minister Stalin has created this new history with his unique personality and cordial nature.

targeted the opposition

DMK also launched a scathing attack on the opposition leaders, saying that the opposition leaders were predicting the breakup of the alliance for the last two years, but their wishes remained unheard. DMK taunted and said that till yesterday’s Delhi interview, Edappadi Palaniswami was expecting the alliance to break, but in the end he was left alone. The party claimed that seeing the wave of support for the ruling party, many new parties are also joining this front.
