Tamil Nadu: Congress announces support to form TVK government

New Delhi/Chennai, 6 May. In a major political development in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Congress has announced support to renowned cine star Thalapathy Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) to form a secular government. According to media reports, the decision to support TVK was taken at an emergency meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of Tamil Nadu Congress late on Tuesday night.

Congress’ AICC in-charge of Tamil Nadu affairs Girish Chodankar had called a committee meeting to decide on supporting TVK. Sources said the meeting was held on Zoom and senior members expressed their opinion in favor of supporting actor-turned-politician Vijay, whose party has created history in its very first election.

Sources confirmed that the PAC of Tamil Nadu Congress unanimously decided to support TVK leader Thiru Vijay to form a secular government in Tamil Nadu. Earlier in the day, Congress claimed that Vijay had sought its support to form the government in the state and said that its leadership has directed the state unit to take a final decision on the matter keeping in mind the sentiments of the state.

The party, which is contesting the assembly elections along with the DMK, said it has a mandate for a secular government in the southern state and it does not in any way want to allow the BJP and its proxies to run the government in Tamil Nadu.

According to media reports, senior Congress leaders held a meeting at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s house on Tuesday evening, in which Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar and others attended.

Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, speaking to the media after the meeting, said that the party leadership discussed the post-poll situation in the southern state. He said, ‘TVK President Thiru Vijay has sought support from Congress to form the government in Tamil Nadu.’

In fact, Congress clearly believes that there is a mandate for a secular government in Tamil Nadu, which is fully committed to protecting the Constitution. Congress has a firm intention that BJP and its agents should not run the government of Tamil Nadu in any way. Venugopal also said that the Congress leadership has directed the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) to take a final decision on the election results on the request of Thiru Vijay, keeping in mind the sentiments of the state.

Congress also put a condition on support

However, Congress has also put a condition along with supporting TVK. Congress has said that its support will remain only till TVK does not include any communal forces in its alliance. The party made it clear that the alliance will be only with parties that have faith in the Constitution. The Congress also said that the alliance will work to advance social justice and the values ​​of the Constitution, which include the ideas of Periyar and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Earlier, TVK Chief Vijay thanked Rahul Gandhi in a post on Instagram and wrote, ‘My heartfelt thanks to the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha for his call and good wishes. We will remain committed to doing excellent work in public service and maintaining the cultural environment of our state, which requires working together. Beyond politics, we will give priority to the well-being of the people of Tamil Nadu.

A look at Tamil Nadu election results

It is noteworthy that Vijay’s party TVK has won 108 seats in the results declared on Monday in the 234-seat assembly elections, which is a little less than half. TVK needs the support of 10 MLAs to form a government with a simple majority. Congress has won five seats while Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has won four seats. CPI and CPI-M have got two seats each.

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has won 59 seats and the main rival All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has won 47 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) won one seat each while VCK won two seats.

Interestingly, Congress had contested the assembly elections in a pre-poll alliance with the DMK while the BJP had an alliance with the AIADMK. Now DMK has expressed displeasure over Congress’s support to TVK, saying it is ‘backstabbing’ by Congress.
