The rhetoric in Tamil Nadu politics has intensified before the 2026 assembly elections. The state BJP has claimed serious differences between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its ally Congress.

Chennai: The political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu has started heating up before the 2026 assembly elections. The BJP has claimed differences between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its ally Congress. BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad alleged that there was a tussle going on between the two parties regarding seat sharing and power sharing. He said that some Congress leaders are demanding 45 assembly seats and participation in the government, which has increased tension in the alliance.

Struggle in Congress-DMK alliance

According to BJP, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is under pressure from the Congress leadership, especially Rahul Gandhi. Prasad said that the recent statements and delay of the meeting show the weakness of the alliance. He alleged that the Congress is trying to increase its role in the alliance, while the seat sharing from the DMK side has not been finalized yet.

The BJP is seeing this as an election opportunity amid signs of discontent within the ruling coalition. BJP claims that the differences in DMK-Congress could provide political advantage to the NDA (National Democratic Alliance).

BJP’s attack on ₹5000 scheme for women

The BJP also took aim at the state government’s ‘Kalainar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ scheme, which had announced a one-time assistance of ₹5,000 to women. BJP termed it an election gimmick and alleged that this step was taken to influence the voters. BJP spokesperson Prasad said, this plan is only an election stunt. DMK’s aim is to temporarily attract women and maintain the vote bank.

BJP claimed that NDA is continuously getting stronger in Tamil Nadu. This alliance includes AIADMK, BJP, PMK and other regional parties. Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Chengalpattu-Madurantakam public meeting, Prasad said that better coordination between the Center and the state is possible with a double engine government.

The BJP alleged that the DMK is trying to divert attention by portraying the AIADMK as subordinate to Delhi, while the issues of rising debt, incomplete development work and promises in the state are still unresolved.

Congress’s demand and opposition

Congress leaders argue that their role in the alliance is important, but in the past years the party has been deprived of power in Tamil Nadu. He gave examples – despite winning 61 seats in 1984, 60 seats in 1991 and 34 seats in 2006, Congress did not become a part of the ruling coalition. In 2021, DMK won 133 out of 173 seats, while Congress made its presence felt by winning 18 out of 25 seats. This time Congress has demanded 45 seats and is trying to find more opportunities for young leaders.
