Rain warning in Chennai and southern districts, light drops in Western Ghats – Obnews

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light to moderate rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu on February 26, 2026, especially over the southern districts and Western Ghats, which will be influenced by the low-level atmospheric circulation over the southern peninsula.

There is an alert of thunderstorm and lightning at some places in South Tamil Nadu (districts like Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Thenkasi), and there may be sudden rain, slight gusty winds and thunderstorm at one or two places. Those living in low-lying or southern areas should be alert for localized rainfall.

Western Ghats region (Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, etc.) will receive the heaviest continuous rain, with light to moderate rain at isolated places today and will continue as intermittent rain for the next 48 hours (February 27-28). Cloud formation and changing winds may cause brief spells of heavy rain in hilly areas, although widespread heavy rain is not expected. The weather will remain dry elsewhere in the state including northern and coastal areas.

In Chennai, conditions are stable with **lightly cloudy** skies and no rain expected. Early morning mist or fog may reduce visibility in suburbs and areas like Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and adjoining districts. The maximum day temperature is expected to be between **33°C and 34°C**, while the minimum temperature will be around 23-24°C—providing some relief from the heat due to clouds and humidity. No significant change is visible in the next two days, from February 27 the weather will gradually become stable and dry.

This follows an active spell of rain earlier this week (22-25 February), when areas of the southern peninsula were lashed by heavy rain. For real-time updates, check IMD’s Regional Chennai portal or app.
