“Let India have a bad game..”

Tamim Iqbal On Gautam Gambhir Character: Bangladeshi batter Tamim Iqbal has said that we currently do not know the true character of Gautam Gambhir as a coach, and only when India starts to lose a few matches do we see how he is as a coach and a leader.

Gambhir, who is a former opener and World Cup winner for India, replaced Rahul Dravid as the Indian Cricket Team head coach in August 2024. This came after India won their first World Cup in 13 years in what was Dravid’s last assignment as the coach.

Gauti began his India coaching career with a 0-0 T20I series win in and over Sri Lanka, which was followed by a 2-0 loss in the ODI series. Now in his first time coaching a Test-playing team, the 44-year-old is undertaking a massive challenge in the India vs Bangladesh Test matches.

In the past, Gambhir has had several on-field tussles with Team superstar Virat Kohli. These have come as a player as well as a mentor in the IPL across a decade. But both players have maintained that the tiffs have purely been on-field, and off-field, both are not just cordial but friendly.

Tamim Iqbal, who is generally playing for Bangladesh as a top-order batter across all formats, is not part of the current series. Hence, the veteran is regularly seen in the commentary box.

While commentating, Iqbal clearly stated that as of now, we do not know how Gautam Gambhir is as a head coach and that we will know his true character after the team starts losing matches, and his reaction then will determine how he is as a coach, saying,

“When you’re winning, you don’t know the real character of the man. It’s only when you lose a series, then you lose another, that the real character comes out. No doubt, he is a capable man, but it’s too early. Let India have a bad game, then we will see what comes out.”

This came after Axar Patel praised Gambhir for creating a relaxed environment in the dressing room. In a recent interview with JioCinema, Patel said,

“You can get carried away because India got success under Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri. And there’s a chance that you don’t want to change. But at the same time, it’s important that you bring your own way. And the stories coming out of the dressing room are that people are relaxed, and there’s an intent of winning Test matches.”

Taking over one of the most important jobs in world cricket right after his predecessor found massive success saw Gautam Gambhir fill the massive shoes of 2024 T20 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid.

The second of two Test matches between India and Bangladesh is being played in Kanpur’s Green Park. The home team won the toss and decided to bowl first. The Bangla Tigers are at 107/3 in 35 overs, and the rain has delayed the match.
