Tribute at father’s grave after 19 years, politics of Bangladesh heated up with return of Tariq Rahman
Bangladesh News In Hindi: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president Tariq Rahman returned to his homeland Bangladesh after 17 years on Thursday. His return is being seen as a major development in the country’s politics. On Friday, Tariq Rahman reached Zia Garden in the capital Dhaka and paid homage at the grave of his father and former Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman. He offered floral tributes and prayed for the peace of his father’s soul.
Elaborate security arrangements were made during the tribute programme. Tariq Rehman reached Zia Udyan in a red-green bulletproof bus. During this period, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police and army personnel were deployed. Due to security reasons, media persons and party workers were not allowed to enter the cemetery and surrounding areas.
Who was Ziaur Rehman?
It is noteworthy that Ziaur Rahman was one of the prominent military officers of Bangladesh. He led the country as the sixth President of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981. Earlier, he had retired from the army with the rank of Lieutenant General in 1978. Ziaur Rahman was also the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and his role in the politics of the country is considered very important.
Ziaur Rehman was assassinated on 30 May 1981. He was murdered when he was on an official visit to Chittagong and was staying at the Circuit House. The incident occurred during a failed military coup attempt, plunging Bangladeshi politics into a deep crisis.
New political energy for BNP
60-year-old Tariq Rehman was living in London with his family since 2008. He last visited his father’s grave in 2006. His return after staying abroad for a long time is being seen as a new political energy for BNP.
