Tata and Mahindra’s EV Sales Already At 15% Of Their Total Sales

The electric vehicle segment in India has been growing at a steady pace, and we have seen Indian manufacturers take this segment very seriously. Brands like Mahindra and Tata Motors have been bullish about offering affordable yet feature-loaded EVs since the beginning, and it looks like their strategy is finally paying off. According to recent reports, around 15 percent of the total passenger vehicle sales of both Tata Motors and Mahindra now come from electric vehicles.

We’ll start with Tata Motors. The company currently has one of the largest EV line-ups in the Indian market. Tata recently launched the Sierra EV, and its sales numbers are expected to be reflected in the coming months.

Apart from the newly launched Sierra EV, Tata’s EV portfolio includes the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and Harrier EV. In FY2026, Tata sold 92,120 electric vehicles in the Indian market. Compared to the previous financial year, the company recorded a 43 percent year-on-year growth in EV sales.

One of the biggest factors working in Tata’s favour is the availability of EVs across multiple price segments. While the Tiago EV, Punch EV, and Nexon EV cater to buyers looking for relatively affordable electric vehicles, the company also offers premium products like the Harrier EV, which provides a good combination of range, performance, and features. Tata also introduces timely software and feature updates for its EVs, helping maintain customer interest.

As a result, Tata witnessed a significant rise in EV demand during FY2026. The company sold a total of 6,31,387 passenger vehicles during the financial year, out of which 92,120 were electric vehicles. This translates to an EV penetration of nearly 15 percent of its total passenger vehicle sales. With new launches such as the Sierra EV and the upcoming Safari EV, Tata’s EV sales are expected to increase further in the coming months.

Mahindra has traditionally been known for building rugged diesel SUVs capable of tackling challenging terrain. However, over the last five years, the brand has successfully transformed its image. Today, Mahindra not only builds rugged SUVs but also caters to buyers looking for premium SUVs. The company offers both petrol and diesel engine options, while several of its models are also available with four-wheel drive.

Apart from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, Mahindra has also established a strong presence in the EV segment. One of its earliest electric offerings was the XUV400 EV. Since then, the company has come a long way and now offers several EVs based on dedicated electric vehicle platforms.

Mahindra currently has the BE 6, XEV 9E, and XEV 9S in its EV portfolio. The company is also working on several more electric vehicles that are expected to be launched over the next few years. Like Tata Motors, Mahindra has been aggressive in promoting its EV range. While the market was initially slow to respond, demand has started gaining momentum.

In June 2026, Mahindra sold 60,393 passenger vehicles in the domestic market. Out of these, 7,645 units were electric vehicles. This represents a significant increase in EV sales compared to June last year and also marks Mahindra’s highest-ever monthly EV sales. EVs now account for nearly 15 percent of the company’s monthly passenger vehicle sales.

Initially, the BE 6 and XEV 9E received mixed responses from buyers because of their polarising design. However, the launch of the XEV 9S changed things considerably. As the segment’s first three-row, seven-seater electric SUV, it offered the same premium features as Mahindra’s other dedicated EVs while providing greater practicality. This made it an attractive value-for-money proposition and played an important role in boosting Mahindra’s EV sales.
