That was the time when Tata Group, then known as TISCO (Tata Iron and Steel Company), was one of the leading steel companies in the world. When the war started in 1939, there was a severe shortage of steel. The British Army was in dire need of steel for armored vehicles, tanks and weapons. Tata Steel produced 110 different types of special steel, which were useful in war. In addition, Tata Group helped the British Army by keeping its factories running 24 hours a day.
Construction of Tatanagar
During this crisis, Tata Group was ordered by the British government to build a special armored vehicle. Tata developed a 'combat car' in collaboration with the Railway Department. This car was fitted with a Ford V8 engine, which was obtained from the railways. Additionally, it was covered with strong armor plates made in Tata Steel. This vehicle was named 'Indian Pattern Carrier', but it became more famous as 'Tatanagar' because it was manufactured in Jamshedpur, also known as 'Tatanagar'.
