Teenage boxer wakes up from coma following brutal knockout

Sio was hospitalized in critical condition after being knocked out by Jocelyn Camarillo just 78 seconds into the opening bout of a ProBox TV event. The match took place at the National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino last Saturday.

During the fight, Sio was cornered against the ropes and took a series of heavy blows to the head. She collapsed to the canvas completely unconscious, prompting an immediate stoppage, CBS Sports reported.

Medical personnel quickly intervened and carried the teenager out of the ring on a stretcher. Multiple reports indicated she had a seizure during transport, a sign of severe neurological distress.

She was rushed to Loma Linda University Health Medical Center, a leading hospital in the area. Doctors immediately placed her in a medically induced coma and utilized a ventilator to stabilize her condition, a standard medical protocol used to reduce brain pressure and trauma.

Following intensive treatment, Sio’s condition has shown improvement. A statement released by her family and promoters confirmed that she has been brought out of the coma and successfully taken off the ventilator. She remains under close observation in the intensive care unit, monitored by three specialized medical teams.

Her opponent, Camarillo, expressed relief upon hearing the positive update. Writing on social media, the 21-year-old boxer stated she was praying for her opponent’s full recovery. While Camarillo initially celebrated the victory, she quickly broke down on her knees upon realizing the severity of Sio’s condition.

Sio turned professional in September 2025 and currently holds a record of one win and three losses.
This was Sio’s second consecutive knockout loss. She was previously knocked out in January 2026, though her team clarified that the earlier loss was the result of a body shot to the liver, rather than a head injury, according to The Economic Times.

Addressing concerns over allowing the teenager to step back into the ring so soon, Sio’s camp released a statement and insisted she had fully complied with medical regulations, including a mandatory 45-day rest and passing a health evaluation before returning to the ring.

Although a detailed diagnosis has not been publicly released, Sio’s ability to wake up from the coma is a highly encouraging sign. Doctors emphasize that the initial 24 to 48 hours following a traumatic brain injury are critical for determining a patient’s long-term recovery trajectory.
