Tejas Turbulence: ‘Fighter plane did not crash’, HAL’s explanation on Tejas crash, what did it say?

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has now issued a statement on the reports of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas fighter jet crash. HAL has clarified that any LCA Tejas aircraft did not collapse. The incident was a minor technical glitch on the ground.

Reacting to media reports on the Tejas plane crash, on Monday, the country’s state-owned fighter aircraft manufacturer HAL said that no Tejas LCA aircraft had crashed. However, a minor technical glitch was reported on the runway at Frontline Airbase. HAL posted on social media platform X, “Recent media reports have reported that a Tejas fighter jet has crashed. There is no report of an LCA Tejas crash. The incident was a minor ground technical issue.”

HAL further said, “LCA Tejas has the best safety record among high-tech fighter jets in the world. As per standard procedure, this technical issue is being further investigated.” HAL and the Indian Air Force (IAF) are working together to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Rumors of Tejas crash

Rumors are rife that an LCA Tejas fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed during landing after a training flight. It is claimed that the accident took place on February 7 at a forward airbase on the Pakistan border and that the pilot ejected safely. HAL has now issued an official statement calling the incident a “rumour”.

In two plane crashes in the last two years

In March 2024, a Tejas aircraft crashed in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, although the pilot ejected. Additionally, in 2025, a Tejas fighter jet crashed during the Dubai Air Show, killing the pilot. The accident is still under investigation. Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force has ordered 180 Mk1A fighters, but delivery has been delayed by two years.

How many Tejas are in service in India?

According to Defense Secretary RK Singh, the Indian Air Force currently has 38 Tejas aircraft in service. About 80 aircraft are in production, of which 10 are ready for delivery. Additionally, the Indian Air Force has ordered 97 LCA Tejas Mk-2 fighter jets from HAL, which will be multi-role fighters. These aircraft will fill the shortage of MiG-21 aircraft of the Indian Air Force.
