Telangana made a splash in liquor, revenue reached Rs 352 crore on New Year’s night

The sale of liquor in Telangana has created history in December 2025. The state excise department earned a total revenue of ₹5,102 crore this month, which is much higher than the normal monthly average. The main reasons for this unprecedented increase are believed to be the year-end festivals and the ongoing local Sarpanch elections in the state.

Sales of ₹352 crore recorded on December 31

The biggest part of this surge in revenue came in just 48 hours on December 30 and 31, when more than ₹727 crore was deposited in the state treasury. Of these, sales of ₹352 crore were recorded on December 31 alone. This is ₹1,600 crore more than the previous year, resulting in an annual growth rate of 45%.

Changes have been seen in market trends this time. Beer sales declined as the price of a 650 ml bottle increased from ₹150 to ₹180 and cold weather affected consumption. In contrast, there was a huge surge in demand for hard liquors like whiskey, brandy and rum, which increased revenues. Apart from this, the new liquor policy implemented from December 1, in which application fees and license fees have been increased, also boosted the state’s income.

Unexpected increase in alcohol consumption even in rural areas

There was an unexpected increase in alcohol consumption in cities as well as rural areas. Districts like Warangal, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar witnessed record sales in the last week of December, which is being linked to the local election campaign. Festivals and programs due to elections increased the demand for liquor in rural areas.

Now the Excise Department has set an ambitious target of ₹10,000 crore for the last quarter of the financial year (January–March). Officials believe that big events like Sankranti and Medaram Jatra will also drive this increasing sales and this revenue momentum will continue in the coming months.
