Trouble broke out in the old city of Hyderabad early on Thursday morning
Hyderabad: Additional police forces were rushed to Purana Pul and surrounding areas of the Old City early Thursday after a group of people clashed with police and pelted stones while protesting the alleged desecration of a religious place.
Police used force to disperse slogan-shouting mobs that indulged in stone-pelting. A motorcycle was set on fire as tensions escalated around 1 a.m. following rumours of damage to a photograph inside a religious place.
As police moved in, agitated crowds raised slogans and hurled stones at personnel. A lathicharge broke up the mob, which scattered into nearby lanes and bylanes, though sporadic slogan-shouting continued.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot, and additional contingents were mobilised. The incident occurred within the limits of Kamatipura police station in the Charminar zone.
Police said the situation was under control and that teams in full riot gear had intensified patrolling in the area to prevent further unrest.
