Tension increased in CPI(ML)-Congress, Dipankar Bhattacharya…
After the defeat of Congress candidate Pranav Jha in the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections, differences have emerged within the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) alliance. After the election results, the political controversy has deepened due to allegations of cross voting on the allies.
New Delhi: The results of Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections have not only changed the political equations, but have also sparked a new debate within the opposition INDIA alliance. After the defeat of Congress candidate Pranab Jha, allegations of cross-voting leveled against allies have increased tension in the alliance. Amidst this controversy, CPI(ML) Liberation General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya wrote a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, clarifying his party’s stand and strongly objecting to the allegations.
Dipankar Bhattacharya termed the allegations leveled by Congress leaders against CPI(ML) MLAs as “false, baseless and malicious”, saying his party has completely followed the coalition dharma.
Claim of support for Congress candidate
In his letter, Dipankar Bhattacharya said that CPI(ML) is a committed partner party of the Liberation INDIA alliance and followed the common strategy of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha elections. He claimed that both the party MLAs had voted in favor of Congress candidate Pranab Jha. Not only this, before voting, the party’s authorized polling agents had also confirmed both the votes.
According to Bhattacharya, there is no factual basis for accusing his party of cross voting. CPI(ML) alleged that attempts were being made to damage its political credibility. The letter said the party has consistently supported opposition candidates during the Rajya Sabha elections in several states, including Bihar and Jharkhand.
Dipankar Bhattacharya wrote that blaming his party for the defeat of the Congress candidate is an attempt to divert attention from the real facts. He said that making such allegations without any investigation or proof weakens the trust between the allies and can have a negative impact on the unity of the alliance.
Demand for intervention from Congress leadership
In the letter, CPI(ML) appealed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to stop party leaders from making allegations against allies without evidence. Bhattacharya says that the strength of the alliance depends on mutual respect and trust. If allegations are made against each other publicly, it may affect future political cooperation. He also said that there should be an impartial review of the reasons for the election defeat and not blame the allies.
How did the controversy start?
After the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections, some Congress leaders had alleged that some of the alliance partners did not vote in favor of the party candidate. In-charge of Jharkhand Congress. Raju had reportedly accused Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and CPI(ML) Liberation of not extending full support to the Congress candidate.
After this, CPI(ML) immediately refuted these allegations and clarified that both its MLAs had voted in favor of the Congress candidate. The party also claimed that the Congress was not successful in ensuring the support of all its MLAs.
Rajya Sabha election results
The political contest in the elections for two Rajya Sabha seats of Jharkhand was quite interesting. According to the election results, NDA-backed independent candidate Parimal Nathwani won one seat. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Baidyanath Ram was successful in winning the second seat. Congress candidate Pranab Jha did not get the expected support and had to face defeat. According to vote counting:
- Parimal Nathwani got 28 votes.
- Baidyanath Ram got 30 votes.
- Congress candidate Pranab Jha got 20 votes.
A total of three votes were declared invalid, including two votes of BJP and one vote of Congress. Despite the INDIA alliance having majority in the Jharkhand Assembly, the results of the Rajya Sabha elections have raised many questions. The allegations and public rhetoric of cross-voting between the alliance constituents have triggered new discussions in political circles.
