Thailand arrests 7 French tourists over disruptive Songkran water play

The incident occurred on April 12, when the police received reports of a group of tourists gathering on Prachanukhro Road in Patong, obstructing traffic while playing with water and disturbing other road users, The Nation reported.

Officers were dispatched to the scene and found several foreign tourists participating in water play that blocked the roadway and disrupted traffic flow, the South China Morning Post reported.

Police instructed the group to disperse, but some individuals reportedly refused to comply.

Seven French tourists were subsequently arrested and charged with public nuisance.

They were fined and warned against repeating the offense.

The Songkran 2026 celebrations officially began on April 13, but tourists began flocking over from across the world on April 10.

Traditionally, the water fighting festival lasts nearly a week and has been dubbed the “seven dangerous days” by authorities to highlight the dangers on the roads during its celebration.

Official data shows 191 people were killed in road accidents during the first five days of this year’s holiday from April 10 to 14.
