Thailand keep U23 Asian Cup quarterfinals hopes alive with draw against Iraq

Thailand secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Iraq with a dramatic late equalizer in their second Group D match of the U23 Asian Cup, keeping their knockout stage hopes alive.

Entering the match under immense pressure following China’s 1-0 win over Australia, Thailand knew a defeat would result in an early exit from the tournament.

Despite their determination, Thailand fell behind in the 26th minute when defender Nathan James conceded a penalty for a foul on Aymen Luay. Amoori Faisal converted the spot-kick with a powerful strike, marking the third consecutive competitive match in which Thailand conceded a penalty.

The second half saw Thailand launch a relentless offensive, though they struggled with composure in the final third. The deadlock was finally broken in the 85th minute by substitute Chinngoen Phutonyong, who finished from close range after an Iraq defensive clearance deflected perfectly into his path. The goal sparked wild celebrations on the Thailand bench, while Phutonyong immediately rushed the ball back to the center spot in search of a winner.

Thailand nearly staged a complete comeback in stoppage time when Iklas Sanron’s volley hit the post after a leg save from Iraq goalkeeper Layth Sajid. The match ended in confusion as referee Yahya Ali Almulla blew the final whistle during a counter-attack of Thailand, leading to protests from the players.

Following Almulla’s decision, captain Pichitchai Sienkrthok approached the referee for an explanation, and was shown the watch that added time had already passed. Phutonyong, who scored the equalizer, gestured in frustration, while in the technical area, coach Thawatchai could only smile at what was happening.

After the second round of Group D, Thailand are in last place with 1 point. The teams above them are Iraq (2 points), Australia (3) and China (4).

The group’s final round will take place on Wednesday. Thailand must beat China to advance, without caring about the result of the other match.
