Thailand seizes 100 kg of crystal meth in tour van bound for Malaysia

Thai police found 100 kg of crystal methamphetamine being smuggled to Malaysia in a concealed compartment in the roof of a tour van near the border in Songkhla Province.

According to Thai media, officers from Southern Border Provinces Investigation Division sub-division 2 and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board’s Region 9 had closely followed the tour van as it headed south.

They intercepted it at Khuan Meed security checkpoint in tambon Khuan Meed of Songkhla’s Chana district on Thursday.

The 30-year-old driver and two other suspects were arrested. The driver allegedly admitted he was delivering the drugs from Bangkok to drug network agents in the border town of Sungai Kolok, in Narathiwat.

The three were charged with collusion in possession of illicit drugs with intent to sell, and related offenses.

According to police, the seized 100 kg of crystal meth is worth about 20 million baht (US$594,000) , but will be worth two or three times as much in Malaysia.

Authorities impounded the suspects’ assets for further investigation. They included seven vehicles, six blocks of land, 40,000 baht (US$1,190) cash, 12,230 ringgit (US$2,810) and two pistols.
