Thailand was the seventh best country in the world for tourism, surpassing Southeast Asian neighbors including Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, a new report says.
Singapore ranked 14th, Malaysia (31st), Indonesia (32nd), the Philippines (33rd), Vietnam (41st), Cambodia (62nd) and Myanmar (72nd), according to the rankings released by the U.S. News & World Report.
The rankings were based on a global survey of more than 17,000 respondents who rated these countries based on factors such as beautiful scenery, friendly locals, adventure and great food.
Italy was the best country for tourism, followed by Spain and France.
Thailand has long been famous for its golden pagodas, friendly locals and favorable visa policy.
Since July it has increased the number of countries and territories whose citizens can enter without visas and stay for two months from 57 to 93.
Thailand has welcomed nearly 30 million foreign tourists so far this year and is on track of fulfilling its 36-million target for the whole year.
Last month, Thailand and Vietnam were the only two Southeast Asian nations named in Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the world’s 20 best countries for travelers as voted by the magazine’s readers.
