Thailand, Vietnam join Singapore and Indonesia in 2027 Asian Cup, Philippines eliminated
Thailand have joined regional neighbors Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia in the continental tournament next year.
On Tuesday evening at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, host nation Thailand faced immense pressure in a decisive Group D match. Tied on points with Turkmenistan but trailing due to head-to-head results, Thailand needed a victory to advance.
The host took an early lead in the 14th minute when Suphanan Bureerat headed in a corner kick from Theerathon Bunmathan.
However, the momentum shifted in the second half when Turkmenistan’s Teymur Charyyev scored a beautiful long-range equalizer in the 60th minute, putting Thailand in danger of elimination.
Desperate for a winner, Thailand launched relentless attacks with 14 shots toward Turkmenistan’s goal. Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Manuel Tom Bihr emerged as the hero, heading the ball in from close range in the 89th minute to secure the 2-1 victory and Thailand’s ninth Asian Cup appearance. They topped Group D with 15 points after six games, edging out Turkmenistan.
The Philippines suffered heartbreak just hours later. Despite boasting a potent offense, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tajikistan in the final round of Group A. The draw allowed Tajikistan to claim the group’s sole qualifying spot based on tiebreakers.
Despite possessing an effective attacking line with 15 goals in the campaign, including Bjorn Martin Kristensen among the top scorers (8 goals), the Philippines were unable to achieve their target at the crucial moment.
In Group F, Vietnam won all six of their Group F matches, scoring 17 goals while conceding only two. Their convincing victories over Malaysia, Laos and Nepal highlighted their regional dominance and propelled them to their fourth Asian Cup appearance.
Indonesia qualified directly from the second round, while Singapore provided a major surprise by topping Group C, marking their return to the tournament for the first time since 1984.
As of Tuesday, 23 teams had qualified for the 2027 Asian Cup. The final spot will be determined after the match between Lebanon and Yemen, which has been postponed to June 2026 due to the Middle East conflict. Lebanon only need a draw to qualify, while Yemen must win.
The 2027 Asian Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia from Jan. 7 to Feb. 5, 2027, featuring defending champion Qatar and record four-time winner Japan.
The tournament will continue the familiar group stage format, with six groups of four teams each, with the group winners, runners-up, and four best third-placed teams advancing to the next round.
