Mega Shipbuilding Cluster Plan

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu C. Joseph Vijay aka Thalapathy Vijay has reiterated the state government’s commitment to set up a mega shipbuilding cluster of HD Hyundai at Thoothukudi at the earliest. This ambitious project with an investment of around 4 billion dollars i.e. approximately Rs 38,000 crore is expected to create approximately 15,000 jobs in the region.

Chief Minister’s visit to discuss

A high-level delegation from HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), one of the world’s largest shipbuilding companies, recently met the Chief Minister to review the progress of the project and discuss the next course of action.

Signing of MOU Agreement

The South Korean company has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to set up this greenfield shipbuilding facility. The project will strengthen the maritime and industrial ecosystem in southern Tamil Nadu and establish Tuticorin as a major shipbuilding and heavy industry hub.

The project will gain momentum

Sipcott and V. for supporting this initiative. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has jointly set up a special body named ‘National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Tamil Nadu Limited’. The project has also received first in-principle approval from the Directorate General of Shipping.

Debt Relief

The Tamil Nadu government is heavily indebted and the state’s outstanding debt is estimated at Rs 10.71 lakh crore as per the Interim Budget 2026-27. The project will bring money to the Tamil Nadu government’s coffers and also provide debt relief. Thalapathy Vijay had promised to provide employment to the youth during the elections. The jobs generated by this project will contribute significantly to the fulfillment of Thalapathy’s election promises. Recently, several other companies have signed various projects with the Tamil Nadu government.
