Asif Nazrul U-Turn on T20 WC 2026 Boycott: A new statement has emerged regarding Bangladesh’s non-participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul said on Tuesday that the decision not to travel to India was not taken by the government, but the decision was taken jointly by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the players.

During the press conference at the National Sports Council, when he was asked whether he had any regrets about not participating in this big tournament, he clarified that there was no question of regrets. Taking a different stance from his last month’s statement, he said that the decision was that of the BCB and the players. He took this step keeping in mind the country’s cricket security and public safety. He said that the role of players and board in maintaining the dignity of Bangladesh will always be inspiring.

It is noteworthy that on January 22, Nazrul had said that it was the government’s decision not to play the World Cup in India due to security reasons. Just a day after this, i.e. on 23 January, ICC had announced the inclusion of Scotland in place of Bangladesh in this tournament. That is, it is now clear that Asif Nazrul has gone back on his earlier statement.

Besides, Nazrul also appreciated the role of BCB in the tripartite meeting held between Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), ICC and BCB in Lahore. He said that BCB showed amazing cricket diplomacy. ICC is now saying that we will not be given any kind of punishment, but we will be made co-host of a global event. He said that this is a great achievement and if such a situation arises ten times, then a similar decision should be taken ten times.

In support of Bangladesh, the Pakistan government had initially instructed its team not to play in the group match against India to be held in Colombo on 15 February. However, later after talks, Pakistan changed its stand. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on

This development has again brought South Asian cricket politics and diplomatic equations into the spotlight during the T20 World Cup.
