Under this scheme, if a person starts the business of rearing horses or donkeys, he can get financial assistance up to Rs 50 lakh from the government. Apart from this, if any state government works for the conservation of donkey breed, it will be provided separate additional budget from the central government.

Why was National Livestock Mission started?

In fact, in view of the continuous decline in the number of donkeys in the country, the government has included them in the National Livestock Mission (NLM) scheme. According to the 20th animal census conducted in the year 2019, only 1.23 lakh donkeys are left in India. According to government data, the donkey population has declined by 60 percent compared to 2012. With the aim of improving this serious situation and promoting the conservation of donkeys, the Government of India has come up with this special scheme, so that their declining numbers can be stopped.

The main objective of the government is to save the donkey breed from extinction and to increase their population, so that people follow them and their breed remains safe.

Foods made from donkey milk are being promoted

Apart from this, if any state government works for the conservation of the donkey breed, it will be provided additional financial assistance from the Central Government. At present, products made from donkey milk are also being promoted in the market. According to the information, a government institution has sent a proposal to FSSAI to recognize donkey milk as a food item. Not only this, some time ago Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev had also consumed donkey milk and described it as delicious, due to which people’s awareness about it has increased.

Which states have more number of donkeys?

According to government reports, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of donkeys. At the same time, reports have also revealed that in some states only 2 to 10 donkeys are left.

What is NML Scheme?

National Livestock Mission (NLM) was started in the financial year 2014-15. The government has been continuously making efforts to make it more effective, as a result of which the scheme has been further improved in the year 2021-22. The main objective of this scheme is to promote employment opportunities in rural areas, improve the breed of animals and also increase the production of meat, milk, wool and fodder.

This scheme is for donkey and horse

Under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), if an individual, Farmer Organization (FPO) or Self-Help Group (SHG) starts the business of horse, donkey or camel rearing, the government will give it 50% subsidy on the total cost, with a maximum limit of Rs 50 lakh. Apart from this, the state governments will also get huge help from the Center for improving the breed and conservation of these animals. For example, the central government will provide financial assistance of up to Rs 10 crore to the states for opening semen stations or breeding farms.

What are the rules for donkey rearing?

Minimum Unit: 50 female + 5 male donkeys.
Subsidy: Up to Rs 50 lakh (50% capital subsidy)
Only for indigenous breeds (not foreign breeds)
Subsidy is available in two installments. First on getting bank loan, then on completion of the project.

Horses: 10 females + 2 males -up to Rs 50 lakh
Camel: 3 lakh to 50 lakh depending on the unit size.

To avail the benefits of this scheme, you can apply online on the official portal nlm.udyamimitra.in. You can start your project through bank loan, on which the subsidy amount will be sent directly to your account by the government.
