Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led party Trinamool Congress on Friday took a historic decision and nominated Maneka Guruswamy, the first person from the LGBTQ community in the country’s Parliament, to the Rajya Sabha. Maneka will be TMC’s Rajya Sabha candidate from West Bengal, elections for which will be held on March 16. Along with Maneka Guruswamy, the party has also nominated three others to the Rajya Sabha.
Apart from Guruswamy, TMC has fielded former Union minister Babul Supriyo, former Bengal DGP Rajiv Kumar and actress Koel Mallick. Maneka Guruswamy is a lawyer by profession. He is a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to him,” TMC said in a post on Twitter. It is hoped that all will maintain the everlasting legacy of the strength of the Trinamool Congress and its commitment to protect the rights and dignity of every Indian.

Who is Maneka Guruswamy?
Maneka Guruswamy is a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court. Guruswamy has been among those lawyers in the country who fought a historic constitutional case for the LGBTQ community in the Supreme Court. After this, after the repeal of Section 377 of IPC in the year 2018, homosexuality was decriminalized in India.
Maneka Guruswamy started her career in 1997 under former Attorney General of India Ashok Desai. She considers Ashok Desai as her mentor. During this time he mainly worked on litigation and constitutional matters.
studied at Oxford and Harvard
After one and a half years of her internship, she went to Oxford University in the US for further studies. After completing his BCL from Oxford and LLM from Harvard in 2001, he worked for some time as an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York. Later she returned to India and settled in the capital Delhi.

Included in the list of influential global thinkers
He was included in Foreign Policy magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential Global Thinkers of 2019. Apart from this, along with her partner Arundhati Katju, she was also included in Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people of 2019.
The special thing is that a photograph of Maneka Guruswamy has been installed in Milner Hall of Rhodes House of Oxford University. She is the first Indian and second woman to receive this honour. Apart from this, Maneka Guruswamy recently advocated on behalf of TMC in the court action challenging the ED searches in the office of Prashant Kishor’s company I-PAC.
