‘The Devils’: Created an uproar due to religious controversy and bold scenes! Ban lifted after 55 years, ‘The Devils’ to be released in Cannes
New Delhi. A horror film released 55 years ago, which created an uproar all over the world, is now finally going to return in its original form. The director’s cut of famous director Ken Russell’s controversial film ‘The Devils’ will now be released for the first time in front of audiences across the world. The special thing is that the film has been restored in 4K quality, so that people can watch it exactly the way Ken Russell wanted to show it.
The legendary film of horror cinema ‘The Devils’ will shock people again
In the year 1971, Warner Bros. Had released this film. The film was based on The Devils of London and John Whiting’s play. But at the time of release, there was so much controversy over the violent, scary and bold scenes related to religious symbols shown in the film that heavy cuts had to be made to release it in America and Britain. Despite this, the film was banned in many countries.
Now after 55 years, the same original and uncut version of the film i.e. “Russell Cut” is coming back. Its world premiere screening will take place this month in the Cannes Classic section of the Cannes Film Festival. After this the film will be released in theaters across the world. Its special theatrical release in the US will be on October 16, 2026, just before Halloween.
Many scenes were cut for release, now the real form of the film will be seen
The story of the film is based on 17th century France. It tells the story of a priest, Father Urbain Grandier, who is accused of witchcraft. In the film, ‘demonic possession’ i.e. possession by evil spirits and large-scale exorcism among the nuns has been shown in a very scary manner.
The acting of Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave in the film is still considered to be the best performance of their career. The set design and background music of the film made it a cult classic of horror cinema. Even though the film faced criticism at the time of release, Ken Russell received the Best Director Award at the Venice International Film Festival. Gradually this film became a ‘legend’ among horror fans.
Once banned in many countries, now this horror film is returning in 4K.
The interesting thing is that the history of this film has always been full of controversies. In 2010, a version of it appeared on iTunes for a few days, but was removed in just three days. Later it also appeared on streaming platforms for some time, but then disappeared.
Now for the first time, the Director’s Cut of the film will also be officially released on 4K Blu-ray. This means that fans of horror films will now be able to make this much-discussed film a part of their collection. It is being said that The Devils is not just a horror film, but one of the most bold and controversial films in cinema history. And now, after decades of waiting, the audience is going to get a chance to see it in its original form.
