The families of 27 students killed in the Gen-Z movement will get government jobs, Nepali PM Balen Shah announced.

New Delhi: As soon as the new government is formed in Nepal, Prime Minister Balen Shah has taken a sensitive and big decision. The process of providing government jobs to the families of 27 students who lost their lives in police firing during the Gen-Z movement of September 2025 has been started rapidly. This step is being considered a symbol of the government’s sensitivity towards the youth.

What happened in the movement?

On September 8, 2025, 19 students were killed in police firing on the first day during the anti-corruption Gen-Z movement. The next day, 8 more students lost their lives during treatment in the hospital. The death of a total of 27 students had shocked the entire Nepal. After this incident, there was huge anger among the youth and pressure on the old government increased.

After the formation of the new government after the movement, Prime Minister Balen Shah gave priority to this issue in his first cabinet meeting. Fulfilling the promise given during the elections, he decided to give government jobs to the next of kin of the deceased students.

Job placement process begins

Nepal Electricity Authority has issued an official notice implementing this decision immediately. The authority has published the list of family members of 27 students. These family members will be given jobs in the nearest office of their home district on the basis of their qualifications. It is clearly stated in the notice that the person concerned will have to submit the certificate of his relationship within 35 days. After this they will be handed over the appointment letter.

opposition demand

This decision was not limited to mere announcement, but started being implemented immediately. Balen Shah’s government is seeing this as a form of financial assistance so that the affected families can get some relief. In Nepali politics, this step is being considered an example of the government’s prompt action and commitment towards the youth.

However, some opposition parties and organizations say that along with jobs, strict action is also necessary against those responsible for the incident. This decision is a positive step towards honoring the families of the martyrs of the Gen-Z movement.
