The film ‘Boong’ related to PM Modi’s praise, Lakshmipriya Devi’s inspiring words and Manipur’s hopes.
New Delhi.India has registered a historic achievement in the British Academy Film Awards 2026 (British Academy Film Awards 2026 – BAFTA). Manipuri film ‘Bung’ brought glory to India by winning the award in the Best Children and Family Film Category. This is the first time that an Indian film has won the BAFTA Award in this category.
On this big victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the film team by writing a post on social media. PM Modi wrote, ‘Many congratulations to all the people associated with this film. This is indeed a very happy moment, especially for Manipur. It also shows the creative talent of our country.
The film ‘Boong’ is directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and this is her debut feature film. The awards ceremony was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, where the entire team of the film was present. While receiving the award, Lakshmipriya Devi also spoke on the current situation in Manipur. She said she prays that peace returns to Manipur and that children’s happiness, innocence and dreams return.
The film’s story is set in Manipur and focuses on family, friendship and hope. Gugun Kipgen plays the role of the little boy Boong in the story. Boong lives with his single mother Mandakini and sets out to find his missing father along with his best friend. The film was produced by Farhan Akhtar, Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, Ritesh Sidhwani and Shujaat Saudagar.
‘Boong’ premiered in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. Winning this award at BAFTA not only recognized Manipur’s cultural and creative talent on the international stage but also gave an inspiring message to the audience.
