The first commercial chip production in India may begin by the end of February.

Possibilities of starting the first commercial chip production in India

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held in New Delhi, S., Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Krishnan said that India is now close to its first commercial-scale chip manufacturing. This indicates that the country may soon start mass production of chips.

According to reports, Krishnan said that the first of the 10 semiconductor projects approved is likely to be inaugurated by the end of this month. Micron is planning to start production at its factory in India, which will be the first commercial production of semiconductor in India.

Important projects of Micron Technology

Major American company Micron Technology is included in the projects that have received support under the India Semiconductor Mission. The company will manufacture high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is currently critical to advanced artificial intelligence systems.

According to Krishnan, Micron will further focus on HBM production, which is proving essential for AI. In recent times, the demand for AI infrastructure has increased rapidly, opening up possibilities for domestic production in India. This will reduce the country’s import dependence and increase technological self-reliance.

Semiconductor Mission Lively

The government recently announced Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which makes it clear that chip manufacturing will get full support in future also. A major goal of this new phase is to design specialized chips related to AI. S. Krishnan said this is not an immediate plan, but an important step towards making India its own ‘indigenous AI system’.

Interestingly, India is planning to adopt a different strategy in terms of AI infrastructure. Instead of spending more on building large data centers, the government is emphasizing on providing AI computing facilities to people and companies at affordable rates. Krishnan clarified that the government’s effort is to provide easy and affordable access to AI computing.
