The Great Flood’s ending, explored
Netflix’s new movie The Great Flood looks like a disaster story at first. A massive flood. The end of the world. Panic everywhere. But the real story is much deeper.
The film follows a mother named An-na and her son Ja-in. They are trying to survive a deadly flood. Everything feels real. The danger feels constant. Their bond feels strong.
Then the big twist hits. None of this is real. The flood is part of a simulation. It was created to recreate a tragedy from the past. The goal is to build a new future for humanity. An-na is not just a random survivor. She lived through the real disaster years ago. She lost her son during that flood. That pain never left her.
She later worked for the Darwin Center. Her job was to help build the Emotion Machine. This device was meant to give real emotions to synthetic babies. Babies born without a womb. Babies meant to restart life on Earth.
Ja-in is not real either. He is a synthetic version of her real son. He was created using her memories.
An-na was placed inside the simulation as a test. She was meant to act as the perfect mother. The system kept looping until her maternal instincts were fully formed.
Each time, she had to find Ja-in in the chaos. That was the test. If she succeeded, the experiment would work. Slowly, her memories returned. The truth came out. In the real past, she was forced to leave Ja-in behind. U.N. forces took her away. He died alone.
That guilt is why she entered the simulation. She wanted to save him. Even if it was only in another world. There is also Hee-jo. He is a security officer inside the simulation. His job is to save An-na. Not the child. Just her.
But An-na changes him. She convinces him to help her find Ja-in. Together, they fight through the flood. When soldiers arrive again, just like in the past, An-na refuses to leave this time. She stays with her son.
That choice changes everything. Her love completes the simulation. The Emotion Machine finally understands real human emotion. Love. Fear. Sacrifice. That moment saves humanity.
In the end, both An-na and Ja-in are revealed to be dead in the real world. She died after being taken into space. Ja-in died after being left behind. But there is one final twist.
Their consciousness survives. Their memories are transferred into new bodies. They are sent back to Earth.
They are not alone. Other mothers and children are coming too. A new beginning is underway. Hee-jo does not return with them. He only existed in memory. But his influence remains.
Through An-na and Ja-in, a new era begins. The flood was never the real disaster.
Losing love was.
