The idea of Mr. India was born in Amitabh’s absence, Javed Akhtar made a memorable Bollywood film.
New Delhi . In the world of films, many times a small incident gives rise to a big story, which perhaps no one could have imagined before. The idea of the film Mr India, which is counted among the cult films of Bollywood, was also born from a similar unique story. Interestingly, the seed of the story of this film was sown when megastar Amitabh Bachchan could not reach on time for the Muhurat shot of one of his films. That small incident sparked an imagination in the mind of writer Javed Akhtar, which later gave Hindi cinema one of its first popular science-fiction superhero films.
The story started with the Muhurat ceremony of a film. That day, Amitabh Bachchan was to give the first shot with the lead actress of the film, but due to some reason he could not reach the set on time. The auspicious time was passing and the entire unit was waiting. In such a situation, the team adopted a unique method. He decided that the shot would be taken, but only his voice would be used in place of the hero. An audio tape was played and the camera was rotated in such a way that it seemed to the audience as if the hero was present, whereas in reality he was not visible.
This scene was no less than an inspiration for Javed Akhtar, who was present there at that time. An idea immediately came to his mind – what if a story was written in which the hero was not actually visible and his presence was only felt? From this thinking, a character was born who helps people, but is not visible. This imagination later became the foundation of the story of ‘Mr. India’.
Later director Shekhar Kapur took up the responsibility of bringing this story to the big screen. The names of many actors were considered for the film, but ultimately the role went to Anil Kapoor and he made it memorable. Sridevi’s bubbly acting in the film and her famous song Hawa Hawai settled in the hearts of the audience. Amrish Puri as the villain Mogambo left such an impact that his dialogue “Mogambo Khush Hua” is still counted among the most popular dialogues in film history.
This film, released in the year 1987, is considered to be one of the most expensive films of that era. Investing so much money on this film, made with a budget of around Rs 3.8 crore, was a big risk at that time. However, after its release, the film achieved great success at the box office and grossed more than Rs 10 crore.
‘Mr. India’ has made a place in the hearts of the audience not only because of its earnings but also because of its unique special effects, entertaining story and memorable music. Even today, when we talk about the best and iconic films of Hindi cinema, the name of ‘Mr. India’ is definitely taken. The interesting thing is that the film whose idea was born from a simple incident, later became one of the most memorable films of Bollywood.
