The issue of toll collection on Bhopal-Betul NH-46 has now reached Rajya Sabha.
New Delhi 19 December 2025: Issue of toll collection on National Highway The issue of toll collection on Bhopal-Betul National Highway (NH-46) has now reached the Rajya Sabha, where during the winter session, former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh had raised strong objections on the issue, directly referring to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Digvijay Singh had raised the issue of toll collection on Bhopal-Betul National Highway (NH-46) in the Rajya Sabha. He had told Nitin Gadkari that toll is being collected despite incomplete work, which is injustice to the public. Digvijay Singh raised questions on Kundi toll plaza near Shahpur and said that the highway is full of potholes and incomplete constructions. He demanded that toll collection should be stopped until the road is completely repaired.
Digvijay Singh had informed the House that the highway between Bhopal and Betul is still incomplete at many places. The road is in a bad condition, and construction work is going on at many places, yet full toll is being collected from the passengers. He said that charging toll for incomplete work is a grave injustice to the public.
This issue is especially worrying at Kundi toll plaza near Shahpur. The Betul to Itarsi highway is full of potholes, incomplete asphalt work and ongoing construction, causing a lot of inconvenience to drivers. Passengers and local people have complained many times that there is no arrangement for sign boards, lights and service roads on the road.
Raising an important issue, the Rajya Sabha MP said that Nitin Gadkari himself had earlier slammed the concerned officials and contractors for the poor condition of this highway. He said, “Minister, you yourself had slammed the officials, but despite your instructions, nothing has changed on the ground. The recovery is still going on and the work is still pending.”
Digvijay Singh demanded to stop toll collection
Betul-Bhopal road is an important lifeline for Madhya Pradesh. Digvijay Singh had argued that collecting toll is morally and legally wrong unless the road is completely safe and accessible. He had demanded that toll collection should be stopped immediately until the construction work is 100% completed.
