The Kerala Story 2 controversy: ‘The Kerala Story 2’ gets green signal from Kerala High Court, path cleared for release

The Kerala Story 2 film controversy: The makers of the film ‘The Kerala Story 2’ have got a big relief from the Kerala High Court. The 15-day interim stay on the release of the film has now been removed by the Division Bench. Earlier, the single judge bench had banned the release of the film, after which its release became uncertain.

Earlier the release was banned

In fact, a single bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, while hearing the petitions, had ordered a temporary ban on the film. The petitioners had alleged that the image of the state of Kerala has been wrongly presented in the film and this may affect social harmony and law and order. After this order of the court, there was suspense over the release of the film. However, later the division bench of Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice PV Balakrishnan overturned the order of the single judge. The division bench said that there is no sufficient basis for continuing the interim order given earlier. Along with this, the court had directed the Central Board of Film Certification to review the film again, so that a final decision can be taken keeping in mind all the objections.

It was to be released on this day

The film was scheduled to be released in theaters on February 27, but due to legal disputes, it could not be released on time. Meanwhile, the process of refunding the ticket amount to the spectators who had made advance booking had also been started. After the news of ticket refund came to light, the petitioner refused to file a contempt petition. The certificate given to the film was challenged in the petitions filed in the High Court. The petitions said that the title and promotional material of the film presents Kerala in a negative light. The petitioners claimed that the theme and content of the film could increase disharmony in the society and could affect the peace and order of the state.

There was a demand to remove this from the film

In a petition, there was also a demand to remove the word ‘Kerala’ from the name of the film. The petitioners argued that using the name of the state sends the message that the story of the film is completely factual and related to a particular state, which may create confusion.

Clear the way for the release of the film

At present, after the latest decision of the Division Bench, the way for the release of the film has been cleared. Now the makers can release their film in theaters after the legal hurdles are removed. This entire incident has once again sparked a debate about the balance between freedom of expression and social responsibility of films.
