According to reports, Nargis Mohammadi was forcefully arrested by security forces in the morning during a program to commemorate the seventh day of Khusro Alikordi. Khusro Alikordi was a lawyer who was recently found dead in his office under suspicious circumstances. Nargis, 53, was recently out of jail on medical grounds and it was believed that she would not be sent to jail again.

The families of Sepideh Gholian, Puran Nazemi, Hasti Amiri and Aliyeh Motalebzadeh have confirmed their arrest. Reports also suggest that along with Nargis Mohammadi, Asadullah Fakhimi, Akbar Amini, Hassan Bagheriniya and Abolfazl Abri were also detained. Nargis Mohammadi Foundation demands the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees.

The US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) published photographs of Mohammadi in which she was not wearing a headscarf, which women are required to wear in public in the Islamic Republic. She was attending the ceremony with a group of Alicardi supporters.

According to reports, they chanted slogans such as “Long live Iran!”, “We will fight, we will die, we will not accept insults” and “Death to the dictator” at the ceremony, which was held to mark seven days since Alicordi’s death in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has condemned the brutal arrest of Nargis Mohammadi. “The Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply concerned by the brutal arrest of Nargis Mohammadi and several other activists today. Ms. Mohammadi – the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate – is a staunch supporter of human rights, freedom of expression and democratic participation in Iran,” committee chair Jorgen Wattne Friednes said in a statement.

He said, “The Norwegian Nobel Committee appeals to the Iranian authorities to immediately reveal Mohammadi’s whereabouts, ensure his safety and dignity, and release him without conditions. The Committee stands with Nargis Mohammadi and all those in Iran who work peacefully for human rights, the rule of law and freedom of expression.”

“Given the close cooperation between the governments of Iran and Venezuela, the Norwegian Nobel Committee notes that Ms. Mohammadi has been arrested at the same time as the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee chair said.
