The magical world of colors of Holi… From mythology to astrological mystery, know why colors play!
Lucknow: Holi is not just a festival of colors but also a symbol of happiness, love and new beginnings. Playing with colors after Holika Dahan on Phalgun Purnima is celebrated with great pomp in India and Nepal. Indians settled all over the world also follow their traditions. This festival gives the message of victory of good over evil, victory of religion over unrighteousness. But there are interesting mythological stories and astrological reasons hidden behind the tradition of playing with colors, which make it even more special.

The tradition of colors started from the love-festival of Radha-Krishna.
According to mythology, Lord Krishna was worried about his dark complexion in his childhood. He was afraid that fair Radha would not like his complexion. Then mother Yashoda jokingly said, “Go to Radha and apply color on her face!” Krishna did the same, and Radha also applied color to him. The tradition of applying colors started from this divine love game, which is still played with great enthusiasm in Braj. These colors became a symbol of love equality, devotion and fun.
Why are colors special from an astrological point of view?
The time from Holashtak to Holika Dahan is considered to be the fierce state of the planets. Negative energy may increase during this period. According to astrology, natural colors reduce the adverse effects of planets, increase positivity and fill with energy and enthusiasm. At the beginning of Chaitra, there is a transition season, where there is a risk of infectious diseases. Natural colors protect (in many places colors are also applied to animals). Nowadays, chemical colors can cause harm, hence the scriptures recommend natural gulal.
