One of the most mysterious and frightening places on Earth is the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. This deep trench hidden at the bottom of this ocean is almost 11,000 meters deep. Its deepest part is called Challenger Deep. The depth is so great that if Mount Everest were placed there, it would still have 2 km of water left on it. How this ditch was formed is a very interesting question. Tectonic plates on Earth’s surface are constantly moving. This deep trench was formed by the collision of the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Plate. This process is called subduction. These movements over millions of years created a huge ‘V’ shaped trench in the ocean floor and we call it the Mariana Trench.

The fact that life exists even in these extreme conditions is the most amazing thing. Sunlight does not reach, the temperature is very low and the pressure is extremely high. However, some strange creatures are found here. For example, small shrimp-like organisms called amphipods are seen here in large sizes. Sea cucumber-like creatures called ‘sea pigs’ live in the mud and search for food. Animals like snails also act as predators in this deep sea.

In this dark world there are also bioluminescent organisms that produce light themselves. Some jellyfish or fish hunt or protect themselves by producing light themselves. So even in complete darkness this world seems to be shining.

HMS Challenger was the first ship in history to attempt to measure the depth of the ocean around 1870. Later in 1960, Don Walsh and Jack Picard made the feat of actually landing in this room. Few people have been able to reach this place even in modern times.

Even today, a large part of this mysterious world is still unknown. According to scientists, many unique organisms are still likely to be found here. The Mariana Trench shows us that the Earth still has many mysteries hidden and yet to be discovered.
