The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) introduced Rich Communication Services (RCS) in September 2008 as a secure method of peer-to-peer communication. This service offers standard end-to-end encryption (E2EE). Which means, intercepted text messages cannot be accessed by any third party. Now GSMA, the association that manages Rich Communication Services, has announced that with the new RCS Universal Profile 4.0, the messaging app will also offer native video call support. Along with this, rich cards with rich text and video embedding along with expressive styling will also be available. However, Google and Apple have not yet announced the integration of this new standard.

Introducing native video calls, rich text and rich cards
GSMA Technical Director Tom Van Pelt has introduced RCS Universal Profile 4.0. In this, he has said that native video call support will be available in the new RCS standard messaging app. which is made possible by the integration of new messaging-initiated video calls (MIVC). Now MIVC users will get the facility to initiate video calls directly from the text messaging window. This will include both one-to-one text and group chat. (Photo Courtesy – Pinterest)
GSMA has said that MIVC will also be able to allow other members of the group to participate in ongoing video calls. This whole process will work like WhatsApp. Even users who are unable to join the call will be able to accept the request to join the video call once the call has started. MIVC is also claimed to pave the way for the “first natively supported video call experience” that can work across a variety of devices and cellular networks.

RCS is also preparing to introduce Universal Profile 4.0 rich text messaging. Which will allow users to add expressive text styles to their messages. This means that users will be able to bold and italicize text messages or remove a word sent by mistake. GSMA’s RCS Universal Profile 4.0 also supports backward compatibility, meaning it will prompt users to check the original version of their text messages. Additionally, it also enables high-quality audio, video and message exchange. RCS Universal Profile 4.0 comes with rich cards for adding links to streaming videos in messages and for sending professional messages.
