The new miracle of AI! China builds humanoid robot that recognizes human emotions; Natural interaction with people
- China’s UBTech has introduced the UWorld U-1 humanoid robot that recognizes and responds to human emotions.
- The robot can communicate naturally by recognizing facial expressions, voice changes, and the context of communication.
- The robot is intended to be used in elderly care, education, hospitality and as a domestic assistant.
Until now, the general perception of robots was that they were mere order-following, emotionless machines. But rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are beginning to change this concept. China has now developed male and female humanoid robots that can recognize human emotions and respond accordingly, have natural eye-to-eye interactions and provide emotional support. On June 30, Chinese robotics company UBTech unveiled its new humanoid robot ‘Uworld U-1’ in Shenzhen, China. This robot is not designed to work in industrial factories, but to live with humans, interact with them and provide emotional support.

How does the U-1 work?
Unlike conventional factory robots, the U-1 is designed to interact naturally with humans. It comes in both male and female versions. The male version is 183 cm tall, while the female version is shorter at 168 cm, with 88 servo joints, allowing it to perform various human-like movements. (Photo Courtesy: You Tube)
The exterior of the robot is coated with silicone to make it look more human, so that people don’t feel alienated when interacting with it. One of the most important features of the U-1 is its emotional AI system. According to UBTech, the robot can recognize more than 20 emotions, make eye contact during conversations, and remember past interactions to provide more personalized responses over time.
Special design for emotional support
U-1 is designed to interact naturally with people in everyday life. It can be used in elderly care, education, hospitality, reception services as well as premium domestic help. This robot can be especially helpful for individuals suffering from loneliness or needing emotional support.

Emotions are recognized through facial expressions and voice
UWorld U-1 is available in three variants namely Lite, Pro and Ultra and currently its sales are limited to China only. Earlier robots only understood commands and acted accordingly. However, the U-1 can recognize the other person’s facial expressions, vocal inflections, and the context of the conversation and respond appropriately.
