The oldest cricketer of Indian cricket passes away

The Indian cricket world has suffered a deep blow during IPL 2026. Among the country’s most senior former cricketers, C.D. Gopinath died on 9 April 2026 in Chennai at the age of 96. His departure marked the end of a glorious era of Indian cricket. He was the last surviving member of the historic Indian team that won Test cricket for the first time. Now after his demise, 95-year-old Chandrakant Patankar has become India’s oldest living Test cricketer.

CD. Gopinath was born on 1 March 1930 in Chennai. He made his Test debut in 1951 against England at the Brabourne Stadium. In his international career, he played a total of 8 test matches, in which he scored 242 runs in 12 innings. His batting average was 20.17 and his highest score was 50 not out. Even though his Test career was not long, he performed brilliantly in domestic cricket.

In first class cricket, he played 83 matches for Madras (now Tamil Nadu) and scored 4259 runs. During this period his average was 42.16, which shows his consistency and ability. In the 1954-55 Ranji Trophy final, he played an important role in Madras winning the title for the first time by scoring a brilliant century. This achievement is considered one of the most memorable moments of his career.

Gopinath’s name is etched in the history of Indian cricket, especially in 1952, when India achieved its first Test win by defeating England in Chennai. In that match, he scored 35 important runs while batting in the lower order. This victory proved to be a milestone for Indian cricket and Gopinath was a witness to that historic moment.

When was the last test match played?

He played his last Test match against Australia at Eden Gardens in 1960. The special thing was that in the very first innings of his debut test, he scored unbeaten 50 runs, which was the highest score of his entire career. This innings showed him to be a talented player.
