The only part of the world without government and law, the truth here will blow your senses.
New Delhi: In the history of the world, there have been big wars over a small piece of land. Even today, many countries are at war with each other for decades over border disputes. But would you believe that there is a place on this earth for which there is no fight to get it, rather two countries are trying to impose it on each other? Yes, there is an area of 2,060 square kilometers between Egypt and Sudan on the map of Africa, on which no country wants to claim it. Except Antarctica, this is the only place in the world which is completely ‘unclaimed’. The name of this place is ‘Bir Tawil’.
After all, where is this mysterious place located?
Bir Tawil is a desert area in the African continent, sandwiched between the borders of Egypt and Sudan. Spread over about 2 thousand square kilometers, this area is bigger than any small city. However, seeing it is no less than a challenge because only hot sand and barren stones are visible far and wide. This area is completely uninhabited and human settlement here is almost zero.
One more mistake of the British and it became ‘land without owner’
The story of Bir Tawil being abandoned is quite interesting and has a direct connection with the British Raj. In 1899, the British had prepared a map, in which this area was shown as part of a country. But just three years later, in 1902, a new map was made, which changed the entire situation. Now the real problem lies here – Egypt considers the 1899 map correct, while Sudan is adamant on the 1902 map.
The real interest of both the countries is not in Bir Tawil, but in the ‘Halaib Triangle’ located nearby, which is quite fertile and valuable. If any country asserts its rights on Bir Tawil, then according to international law it will have to give up its claim on ‘Halaib Triangle’. Just to avoid this loss-making deal, both the neighboring countries move away from this land.
Such a big land, yet why does everyone run away?
The question arises whether 2 thousand square kilometers of land has no value? In the case of Bir Tawil the answer is ‘no’. This area is completely empty of resources. There is neither drinking water nor scope for farming here. The temperature here remains above 40 to 50 degrees Celsius for most of the year. Due to its economic importance, no government wants to bear the additional burden of administration and security by making it a part of its country.
Does any king live here?
No one lives permanently in Bir Tawil, although some nomadic tribes occasionally pass through. When the news of this place being ‘unclaimed’ spread on the internet, many adventure lovers from all over the world reached here. Some people even declared themselves ‘King’ of this area by planting their flag here. Someone declared this place as his country to make his daughter a princess, while someone called it his princely state. However, these claims have no legal value internationally and have not been recognized by any country.
Still remains an unsolved mystery
In a world where blood is shed for every inch of land, Bir Tawil is a unique exception. This place teaches us that boundaries are often determined by lines drawn in closed rooms, which have nothing to do with ground reality. Even today this area exists like a blank spot on the map without any government, without any law and without any citizen, which is still waiting for its real ‘owner’.
