The person who made Doraemon a superhit is no more; Director’s death

Japanese animation industry veteran director Shibayama Tsutomu has passed away. He took the popular show ‘Doraemon’ to new heights for almost 20 years and during this time gave many memorable films, which still hold a special place in the hearts of the audience.

Took his last breath on March 6

Shibayama Tsutomu died on 6 March 2026 due to lung cancer. The studio he co-founded, ‘Ajia-do Animation Works’, confirmed the news on March 17. As per the wishes of the family, his last rites had already been performed privately.

Recognized as the ‘Father of National Animation’

Shibayama Tsutomu was often called the ‘Father of National Animation’ in Japan. He took over the direction of ‘Doraemon’ TV series in 1979 and brought it to the hearts of every generation for almost two decades. Additionally, he directed 22 films of the ‘Doraemon’ franchise, taking the popularity of the series to new heights.

Career beginning and journey

Shibayama Tsutomu began his career at Toei Animation in 1963. After this he worked with Shin-Ei Animation and made his mark in many big projects. Apart from ‘Doraemon’, he also contributed significantly to popular projects like ‘Lupin III’ and ‘Chibi Maruko-chan’.

Big loss to the animation world

His demise has come as a deep shock to the entire animation industry. Shibayama Tsutomu made the childhood of millions of people special through his stories and direction. His creations will always be remembered and will continue to inspire future generations.
