India LPG Import from America: People remain concerned about the prices of LPG. However, there has been no change in its prices since last one month. Meanwhile, rising tensions in West Asia and decline in the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns about India’s energy security.
Keeping this in view, India has started preparations to change its LPG import strategy. The country now wants to reduce its dependence on the Middle East, so that any interruption in supply does not affect domestic needs.
What is the plan till 2027?
India plans to buy about one-fourth of its total LPG imports from America by 2027. It is believed that this step can also strengthen the trade relations between India and America.
At the beginning of the year, the availability of LPG in the country was affected due to tensions between Iran and America and obstacles in the Hormuz Pass. After this, this decision has been taken in the direction of diversifying the sources of imports.
How much LPG does India import?
Let us tell you that India is the third largest oil importer and consumer country in the world. In the year 2025, India had imported 21.85 million metric tons of LPG, of which about 90 percent came from the Middle East. According to government data, the share of imports in the country’s total LPG consumption was about 66 percent.
New preparation of Indian Oil
India’s largest refinery company Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is also preparing to increase LPG imports from America. The company is planning to buy 50 percent stake in very large gas carriers (VLGCs).
If the plan goes through, Indian Oil will be the first Indian refinery company to own a stake in giant gas transport ships. With this, the company will be able to import large quantities of LPG directly from America instead of relying on rented tankers.
