The Putin government banned WhatsApp in Russia! What happened suddenly?
Popular messaging app WhatsApp has been banned in Russia. Vladimir Putin’s government said the crackdown was a failure to comply with Russian law. But according to a group of experts, the Russian government is facing questions at home in the Russia-Ukraine war that has been going on for more than three years. Therefore, Putin has taken this decision to suppress freedom of speech. The Russian government has advised Russian citizens to use the country-made ‘Max’ messaging app as an alternative to WhatsApp.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday, “Meta does not comply with Russian laws and regulations. That’s why WhatsApp is banned in Russia. Citizens can use Max as an alternative. It’s made by the country.”
According to experts, WhatsApp has end-to-end encryption. It acts as a safety ring. As a result, the content of the message cannot be read by anyone other than the sender and recipient. But ‘Max’ has no such safety ring. As a result, users’ privacy may be violated. A section of informed circles claims that the Putin government is promoting the ‘Max’ app to monitor citizens. However, Russian government officials have dismissed the claim. Meanwhile, according to the sources, after WhatsApp, Telegram can also be read in Kope. That too may soon be banned in Russia.
