Kapil Sibal raised questions on the relevance of Parliament
New Delhi. Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal recently said in a statement that the relevance of Parliament is gradually ending. He underlined that people in power are only focusing on issues which are not relevant in the present times. Sibal warned that this trend is extremely dangerous for democracy as important issues are not being discussed.
Parliament meetings are decreasing
Sibal said, “The relevance of our Parliament is gradually decreasing. Now the meetings are less and the general public is under the impression that nothing happens in the Parliament.” Giving the example, he said that during the recent winter session, only 15 meetings were held.
Concern over the situation in Parliament
The former Union minister said, “When we were in Parliament earlier, the winter session used to start on November 20. But now this situation has changed. For example, there were 13 meetings in 2017, 13 in 2022 and 14 in 2023. If such a situation continues, important discussions will not be possible. It is felt that the people in power are not serious about Parliament.”
Opposition concerns
Sibal also mentioned that the opposition wants a discussion on December 1 on a special intensive revision of the voter list, which he considers an important issue of the country. However, the government has placed the condition that Vande Mataram should be discussed first. According to him, this is another example of the decline of the relevance of Parliament.
