India Rafale Jets Deal: India’s military might There will be more boost. The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) of the Ministry of Defense has approved the proposal to purchase 114 Rafale fighter jets from France. It also approved the purchase of six additional P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft for the Indian Navy. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh This decision was taken in the DAC meeting chaired by Mr. The proposal now awaits final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The biggest defense deal ever

The contract, worth an estimated ₹3.25 lakh crore, is considered one of the largest defense procurements in India’s history. Ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to India, the decision is considered significant in terms of strategic ties between the two countries.

Why is this contract necessary?

The Indian Air Force currently has approximately 29 squadrons, while the requirement is estimated to be 42. Due to the retirement of older aircraft, modern fighter jets were urgently needed. The deal could increase the squadron’s strength to approximately 35-36.

Major issues of Rafale deal

  • 18 Rafale aircraft will be procured directly from France in airworthy condition.
  • The remaining 96 aircraft will be manufactured in India.
  • The share of indigenous content may initially exceed 30% and later exceed 60%.
  • Creating thousands of employment opportunities while promoting ‘Make in India’
  • Some aircraft will be two-seaters and will be used for training.

The Indian Air Force already has 36 Rafale aircraft in two squadrons. Delivery of the last ‘C’ variant was completed in December 2024.

Rafael’s strength

Rafale is a multi-role fighter aircraft capable of air-to-air, air-to-ground and maritime attacks. It is equipped with SCALP cruise missile, Meteor air-to-air missile, Hammer precision-guided weapons, Spectra electronic warfare system and modern radar. India also used Rafale aircraft during Operation Sindoor, which demonstrated its capability for precision strikes. According to Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, modern aircraft like Rafale will significantly enhance the capabilities of the Air Force and make it easier to tackle regional security challenges.

Navy will also get a boost

Six additional P-8I Poseidon aircraft have also been approved for the Indian Navy. These are Boeing-built long-range maritime surveillance aircraft capable of detecting enemy submarines, ships and air movements. India already has 12 P-8I aircraft. The induction of these new aircraft will further strengthen maritime security and surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.

Emphasis on technology transfer

The agreement will be on a government-to-government basis to ensure transparency. The agreement prioritizes technology transfer and local production. Agreements between Dassault Aviation and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd in India and France last year are expected to speed up the process.
